New music!

Check out the new Summertime of 2009 playlist on my sidebar!

I know summer's almost over :-( but have you ever found me to be on time for anything? Which is strange because I ALWAYS am in real life...

Hehehe, this one will probably be up 'till February...

Anyways, during the summer my thoughts usually turn towards the 60's, but I have other music on here as well!

Songs on the playlist:

God Only Knows - The Beach Boys (Because it's so nice and mellow)
It Ain't Me Babe - Bob Dylan (Bob Dylan is stinkin' amazing!)
You're The One - The Vogues (I discovered this song the summer I was eleven, and it's happy!)
These Boots Are Made For Walking - Nancy Sinatra (Has summer written all over it!)
More - Bobby Darin (This song is wonderful any time of the year)
Pleasant Valley Sunday -The Monkees (Mickey's is really good in this, and it's just plain cool)
Gidget -James Darren (No explanation necessary; I tried to find Gidget Goes Hawaiian too, but no luck)
Falling in Love At A Coffeeshop - Landon Pigg (Because this song makes me think of rain...I want rain)
The Girl From Ipanema - Frank Sinatra (My sister loves this song and it always remind me of her!)
The Monkey's Uncle - Annette Funicello and The Beach Boys (60's Disney's MEAN summertime!)
Better Together - Jack Johnson (Happy...)
Come Fly With Me - Frank Sinatra (Um, I'm running out of descriptive words, but it brings joy to me! ;-D)
Splish Splash - Bobby Darin (I swing dance to this with my ten year old brother, did I mention I have a cool little brother?)
The Honey Tree - Mostar Diving Club (This song always makes me feel happy!)
Put It There Pal - Bob Hope and Bing Crosby (Originally in The Road To Utopia this song is full of private jokes that make me smile)
For Pete's Sake - The Monkees (I really don't need to explain this one, it The Monkees for goodness sakes!)
Steppin' Out With My Baby - Fred Astaire (Fred Astaire pretty much rules my world!)
Don't Think Twice - Bob Dylan (I know this may sound strange, but this song makes me happy)
Do It Again - The Beach Boys (HAPPY! HAPPY! HAPPY!)
The Tender Trap - Frank Sinatra (So summery)
Falling Slowly - Kris Allen (Mellowly niceness)
Hello Dolly! - Bobby Darin (Bouncy, joyful Bobby Darin...)
At Least We Made It This Far - Relient K (I like this song)
Fever - Peggy Lee (Because Peggy is super-cool! This was the only Peggy version I could find, sadly)
L-O-V-E - Nat King Cole (This song makes me think of going to the zoo with my older sister)
How It Feels - Eleventyseven ("It's like it snowing in the summertime")
Love Is All Around - Sonny Curtis (This is the theme to The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and I always watch that show a lot in the summer)
If I Fell - Jason Castro (I wanted Jason's version of Daydream, but they didn't have it. Imagining his happy, smiling, dreadlocked face just makes me laugh...)

That's it! I hope you like the summer mix!

P.S. I changed the photos for my favorite actresses/actors! Also now, when you click on the photo it automatically links you to all posts I have ever done with that particular person.

What the heck! No rain? Heat in Summer? How can this be happening to me?

Three things the following photos have in common are: they are all B/W, they are all from classic films, and they all feature that cool, refreshing thing known as rain...

The first person to comment correctly all four film titles will get to choose next week's Photo of the Day theme.

Anyways, I actually do have a reason for this post! And that was to rant about the hot weather! I hate hot weather! I hate any weather over 75 degrees! (Sierra Leone was murder...) I'm a native Washingtonian and on top of that my ancestors are all Finnish! Hot weather love just isn't in me. And it was 96 degrees today.

Now, Washington is a pretty diverse state, weather wise (and pretty much every wise). We always get hot weather (several degrees warmer than this usually) in the summer, but it never ceases to annoy me! Oh, for the joy of a few raindrops!

In other news:

I will be posting the next installment in my "Lesser Loved That I Love More" series later this week. The subject: Hannibal Heyes vs. Kid Curry (I'm super-excited for this)!

I am also going to be finally watching The Hustler. I am forever checking this movie out from the library then chickening out and not watching it. But, after reading Raquelle's wonderful review of the film where she expressed similar sentiments. I decided to take courage and watch it! In fact, I was gonna watch it last week, but some stuff got in the way. Well, actually first of all I was going to finally watch The Wild One. My Grandpa gave me a VHS of it over a year ago because he wanted me to watch it, but I've just never been in the mood (actually I'm never in the mood for Brando). But, I finally decided I was gonna watch it (mainly because there wasn't another unseen film in the house). But, miraculously I got a notification informing that The Hustler had come in...OVER NIGHT (very, very, very fast and unusual for my library system). So, any plans of Marlon were quickly disposed. But, then that very day I got another notification from my library for a DVD I had been waiting for for several weeks: The Thomas Crown Affair. Well, Steve McQueen definitely trumps poor Paul! In the end I did watch TTCA. But have no fear I have determined to watch The Hustler and (practically) nothing can deter me. If anything you should be worried for Marlon and The Wild One! I fear I shall never be in the mood again! ;-D

Hahaha...sorry about the long post about nothing!

The Lesser Loved That I Love More: Rick Blaine vs. Victor Laszlo

It's practically no secret that I have this strange tendency to love and defend anything that is normally the lesser loved and under-defended.

It's partially because I like to be original and unique so I say, "Beatles...who needs the Beatles? I got The Monkees! (Who incidentally were NOT the "pre-fab four"...grrrr)". Some say, I'm being contrary...I simply state that I'm being original and unique...;-D

Another one I've mentioned before is the great Simon vs. Garfunkel debate! I instantly took Art's side (when I was about eight)! You can read my three reasons why Garfunkel is cooler than Simon here!

Anyways, I decided to translate this strange tendency into a blog series. Its title is: The Lesser Loved That I Love More (not the greatest grammar, but hey it gets the point across).

My first entry is Rick Blaine vs. Victor Laszlo.

And, if you for some reason live somewhere on the face of this planet (or any other planet) and have not heard one of both of those character names I will explain.

Rick Blaine (played by Humphrey Bogart) and Victor Laszlo (played by Paul Henreid) are the names of two characters in the film Casablanca.

Okay, moving on...

In the battle between Rick Blaine and Victor Laszlo...Victor comes out as the winner, but only slightly and for practically no apparent reason.

Because let's face it Rick's got:

The swagger...

The quick and quotable lines...

The brooding anti-hero spirit...

And the cool fedora...

On the contrary Victor has everything against him:

A boring and bland personality...

Boring and bland lines...

He's a boring and bland hero...

A boring and bland hat...

A strange, never-explained (must of been from the concentration camps) scar...

...and on top of all this he has the dislike of 99% of the people who have ever seen this movie in the last 70 years...poor guy.

BUT.........

Victor has one thing that Rick does not have.....

He has just possibly one of the coolest ever accents.

And for that sole reason Victor beats out Rick.

But, I still do adore Rick.

And in the end, whether you agree about Victor over Rick or if you think it should be Rick over Victor, one thing is certain! Captain Louis Renault beats both of them out as the coolest character in the Casablanca!

One Lovely Blog Award

The beyond cool and amazing Lolita of Lolita's Classics gave me a blog award...um...almost two weeks ago....

Anyways, I now wanted to officially accept this lovely honor, and pass it on!

And, I wanted to profusely thank Lolita for the award. Because getting an award from someone so knowledgeable and amazing is really such a lovely thing...and so good for the blog esteem! And, if I could I really would give the award right back at you...in fact I think I will! It yours again Lolita ;-D!

The people I give the award to are all lovely (with lovely blogs) for different reasons:

Sarah of Cinema Splendor because: she's a dear old friend and I love to visit her blog so much. She's quite funny and clever...but also more than that. I know that when I visit her blog it can cheer me up when I'm sad or make me even more happy when I'm already happy! Going to her blog is like going to a party...the best party ever!

Harley of Dreaming in Black and White because: Harley is Harley. She's funny, sarcastic, and very intelligent. Her blog is like a second home. She loves so many of the same people/things I do (although not for the same reasons...which can cause much arguing! ;-D). Only problem is, she has this really weird crush on Shia Labeouf.......;-D

DKoren of Sidewalk Crossings because: DKoren get's the award for most encouraging blogger. DKoren always leaves a comment on my posts...especially the posts that no one else in their right mind would comment on (example: Michael Callen looking exactly like American Idol Kris Allen). And, when I do a review of Cat Ballou and give Lee Marvin a smashing critique DKoren pops into comment and say that my review was very funny. And slightly mentions that Lee Marvin is a favorite performance of their's...but that I still did an amazing review! That's just DKoren for you! Also, Sidewalk Crossings is an amazing, well-written blog!

Nicole of Classic Hollywood Nerd because: Nicole and her blog are way too underrated! This girl should have at least a thousand followers! Each post from her is original, knowledgeable, concise, lucid (my blog and writing are not), and just plain wonderful! She also comments on my blog all the time...so sweet! Everything about her blog is creative, her ingenious themes and series are amazing...and I should know, because I recently subconsciously stole a series title from her!

Kate-(with a hyphen 'cause she's that cool)Gabrielle of Silents and Talkies because: I don't really know what to say. I'm speechless when I write about Kate. Kate and her blogs are really way too amazing. I recently got to do a guest blogger post for her blog which was admittedly not too good, but Kate never said anything like that! She encouraged me, and drew a most amazing portrait of Ingrid Bergman for it, and then she mailed me the drawing. And well, she's so kind and generous (look at all those contests she does)! All of her paintings, drawings, and Flapperdoodles leave me speechless! Well, I better stop writing because this will get too long...but really Kate is that amazing!

Alexis of Ingrid Bergman Life and Films because: is there anyone who knows more about Ingrid Bergman? Is there anyone who writes better about Ingrid Bergman? Is there anyone who's funnier and also adores Ingrid Bergman? I think not. Alexis is truly amazing.

That's it for this award!

Thanks again to the inimitable Lolita!

Lovely Lady of the Week: Mary Tyler Moore

Before I start I just wanted to mention that I recently discovered that I unintentionally swiped the name of this series from Nicole over at Classic Hollywood Nerd! She has a sidebar series called Lovely Lady of the Month. I must of read that and subconsciously remembered that name. I'm really sorry Nicole! It was accidental!

Now, onto Mary Tyler Moore, my Lovely Lady of the week:

Mary is perky and very cute lady...with such a great skill for comedy. She is also a favorite TV star of mine. Although, most people think of her as Mary Richards from The Mary Tyler Moore Show (a series I adore) I will personally always remember her as Laura Petrie of The Dick Van Dyke Show (my favorite show EVER). Also, she is a huge style icon! Those "Laura Petrie pants" with the flats are particular favorites. And, that 60's flipped out hair...

Enjoy:

Dancing "the Twizzle" with Dick Van Dyke.

The iconic image from the credits of TMTMS.

^Trying on the hideous Empress Carlotta's necklace...that Rob (Dick Van Dyke) loves so much.

^With Gene Barry. Don't you just love that dress?

I hope you enjoyed a little Mary Tyler Moore!

Next week: Greer Garson or Cyd Charisse? Vote in the comments!

Photo of the Day!

I'm back...and oh am I tired after the camp-out with the crazys....

And, I wanted to mention that everyone should go vote for Kate as the best new Etsy shop!

Insanity runs in my family...in fact it practically gallops!

Goodbye my fellow bloggers until Monday!

I'm off to the annual family reunion camp-out and before you say, "That's sounds like fun"...think again! My extended is quite frankly, crazy.

My own family is the most normal one of the bunch, and reading me, I'm sure you can guess what that means about my extended family. ;-D

When I get back...I will be getting to all those posts I always promise, but always forget to post!

And, speaking of the Brewsters...I will show you my place compared to my extended family:

I'm not quite as sane as this:

Nor quite as crazy as this:

I'm not as creepy as this:

Nor as cool as this:

I guess I'm just this:

Pith helmets are actually splendid gear when spending the week with my family...I would absolutely recommend it to anyone...even the cool people!

And by the way, the simply darling Kate-Gabrielle has just published a post I did as guest blogger on her blog. There is a really fantastic drawing of Ingrid Bergman that she did to go along with it! Check it out!

See ya' on Monday!
