Recently, in the gift shop of Thomas Wolfe's home in Asheville, North Carolina, I read the following in the preface to his Mannerhouse, a play that was staged but once: "In 1949 it was performed by the Yale Dramatic Association, a wretched experience endured patiently by small audiences."
I remember. I enacted the leading role, a character Wolfe based on himself.

Recently read some quotes from Bradford Dillman (James Dean: The Biography by Val Holley) about James Dean who was in and around NYC making the same audition rounds. Dillman recalled complaining loudly about the acting game to Dean in a coffee shop and Dean basically told him to stuff it as no one wanted to hear it - basically you want to be an actor this is the life so shut up. Dillman said it was advice he took and followed from then on.
Dillman later played Robert Redford's buddy in "The Way We Were".
