Happy 95th Birthday, Mr. Sinatra!

Frank Sinatra was born on December 11th, 1915. NINETY-FIVE YEARS AGO! Wow! What was the world like 96 years ago?! What did people do without the overwhelming coolness that is Sinatra?! I can't imagine.

There is a quote from the liner-notes of The Heart of the Matter (a random compilation album I own) that I simply adore. It describes The Chairman of the Board so very well!

Sinatra was like some kind of inexplicable Big Bang, all sound exploding out of him and respectfully being bestowed upon a longing audience. His genius aligned with the planets and he sang about the moon and the stars like they were his personal playthings.

That's kind of the essence of complete and utter coolness.

Happy Birthday to my favorite singer ever....

Happy Birthday, Mumzie!

Today is my mum's birthday! I simply couldn't let is pass without writing how positively Wowzie Kazam she is!

She is THE complete reason I ever started watching classic movies! In fact, she watched Pride & Prejudice (1940) with me the very day I was born!

So, really, you have HER to thank for foisting The Millie and her runaway-crazy blog on the world! ;-D

She is completely wunderbar and has always helped "nurture" (I suppose that is an okay word, something rather creeper about it though!) my interests! When I wanted to take my chickens to the fair and show them-- she was there buying special oil to clean their beaks and helping me learn my hen nomenclature! When I wanted to act and be in plays-- she was there, driving me to rehearsal...AND ALWAYS going to the plays....even when they were complete failures! (Cafe' Murder--I'M LOOKING AT YOU! ;-D)

And of course, she buys me bazillions of classic movie books and DVDs for birthdays and Christmas'!

And we have a tradition to watch a new movie (that I've never seen before) on every birthday! 12 it was The Man Who Knew Too Much! 13: Pillow Talk! 14: North By Northwest! 15: Leave Her to Heaven! 16: His Girl Friday (actually, I've seen that before...many times...BUT IT WAS IN THEATERS!)

What you should probably be deriving from all this, is that she's a pretty stupendously amazingly cool mother!

She's also a hippie.

And she's been eating organic and all-natural food years longer than it's been "cool"! (My dad and her even had a all-natural restaurant over 20 years ago!)

And she brought me up to know that Columbo should be adored only slightly more than Peter Paul and Mary-- but not more than Alfred Hitchcock!

And she only gets slightly angry when I make fun of Jimmy Stewart and/or William Shatner! (it's just too easy! ;-D)

She's also stayed at home with all my brothers and sisters and I! STINKIN' HOMESCHOOLING US! I mean, WHAT?! She's pretty crazy! ;-D

In fact, I still have the best memories of sitting around with my sibs listening to her read to us for hours; reading us history books, or Dickens, or Austen, or James Herriot, or Indian in the Cupboard, or James Marshall and William Steig!

And, I'll never forget her making us listen to classical music while we did our math. Handel's Water Music is synonymous with algebra.

Well, I really don't know what else to say about my mum! She's just that awesome! Not to sound cliche, but I really DON'T know what I'd do without her!

I'd probably be off sitting on a couch somewhere, watching Brady Bunch reruns and eating candy.

Sad life.

Anyway, I love you Mumzie! You're the best mother ever!

-Millie

P.S. The thing on mother's chin is just from a rip in the photo!

Happy....EXTREMELY LATE....Birthday, Matthew!

^James Dean enjoying Matthew's birthday cake! James is Matthew's ABSOLUTE favorite actor...EVER!

The completely awesome Matthew Coniam of Movietone News celebrated his birthday on June 20th.

And, I, being, well myself, didn't find out about it...until AFTER HIS BIRTHDAY. (I'm late to stinkin' everything!)

But, I wanted to be sure that he did in fact get wished happy birthday by me...no matter how long it took! Haha!

Matthew is just completely cool. His blog is HILARIOUS! Also, he is a really great writer. And extremely knowledgeable! I always learn something new about film or actors after visiting his blog!

He once wrote a guest post for my blog about Jamaica Inn. It's brilliant. (He and I are two of four people in the world who actually like that movie.)

And he says things like: "A pox on the lot of them!" I mean, SERIOUSLY?! That's automatic coolness.

Anyway, Happy Late Birthday, Matthew. You are stupendously amazingly cool! And, I hope you have many more wonderful birthdays!

-Millie

P.S. He actually hates James Dean. And, that's not cool. ;-D

Why I Like Bob Hope: A guest post from my ten year-old brother!

My ten year-old brother was more than a little angry with me, for not posting ANYTHING on Bob Hope's birthday (Saturday). I did in fact post something to Twitter AND Tumblr, but that just wasn't good enough for him! Haha!

My brother wanted to express his own adoration for Sir Robert Hope, so we made a little interview/video post. It was quickly made, so it's not the best quality, and the camera shakes at times, because I was laughing. James unexpectedly decided to use his "pretentious" voice/eyebrow raise in this video...and I can't help but laugh.

And BTW, those Bob Hope movies stacked on his windowsill-- THOSE ARE MINE. Sheesh! ;-D

Okay, really, we are just a couple of dorks....enjoy! ;-D

Happy Birthday Sandra Dee!

That's right! It's the (66th, 68th, or 69th-- the correct year of her birth is slightly confused) anniversary of the day the talented and adorable Sandra Dee was born!

I utterly adore Sandra Dee. I think she was crazily talented...and completely underrated (SERIOUSLY! She stinkin' brilliant at comedy!)

I've been trying to type this next paragraph for almost a half hour now. I keep erasing what I've already written! I don't know what to say to explain what I'm trying to say!

I just think that she was so amazing, and most certainly does not get nearly enough credit! People ALL to often dismiss her as "The Queen of the Teens" (one of her nicknames by the way...and quite true). BUT SHE WAS SO MUCH MORE! Unfortunately, so many people don't realize that. (Evil song from Grease: I BLAME YOU!)

I always encourage people to watch her in That Funny Feeling, a really hilarious 60's screwball comedy, with Bobby Darin (her husband). Or Come September, a LITERALLY brilliant comedy filmed in gorgeous Italy and starring Rock Hudson, Gina Lollobrigida-- along with Sandy and Bobby!

Truth: I have never met nor heard of a person (even on blogs and internet message boards) who did not like Come September. THAT'S how amazing it/she is!

Sandra Dee was beautiful, talented, could fake a pretty good accent (Until They Sail), could fake some pretty good surfing, sing (OH YES! She could actually sing very well!), could someone how command the affection of everyone who ever even remotely knew her, look amazing in strange beadedish, gold outfits (see bottom of post), and star in some pretty stinkin' freaky Night Gallery's (check Hulu!).

Anyway, this post it going to drag on forever, because there is simply too much amazingness that is part of Sandra Dee! So, I think I better stop here (more Sandyness coming later!)

In conclusion (because this post had such a coherent beginning and middle): Sandra Dee was completely wunderbar. And that is final.

Happy Birthday Sandy!

A dorky little video I just made:

16 Years Of Watching Classic Movies!

...Okay, TECHNICALLY, 16 years of doing anything at all.

Haha! My mom actually watched the 1940 Pride and Prejudice with me the very day I was born!

Other people sometimes say, "Well, I was watching classic film before I learned how to walk!" I say, "Well, I was watching classic film before I learned how to breathe! TAKE THAT!" ;-D

Okay, this post is really unnecessary and more than a little self-indulgent, but oh well! ;-D

I just really wanted to thank everyone who has been wishing me a happy birthday on Twitter! And especially thank you ever so to:

Kate (Some brilliant photoshopped amazingness!)

Nicola (BOBBY/SANDY PICSPAM!)

And Sarah (see below)

for their BEYOND splendid birthday posts!

Sarah being Wowzie Kazam amazing:

I seriously keep watching the second video OVER AND OVER AND OVER, because the creeper birthday song is slightly addicting! ;-D

Thanks so much everyone! You are the best!

80 Years of The King of Cool!

{Do you like my oh-so original title? ;-D}

I'm directly in the middle of four brothers.

I've seen a lot of Steve McQueen movies.

Also my oldest brother simply adores Steve; he knows EVERY thing about him and owns practically every film available. And watches them often. At 3am. LOUDLY. (He has the room next to mine.) So I've also listened to quite a few Steve films.

For his "special" birthday post, I thought I'd list a few of my MOST favorite McQueen films and favorite moments from said films!

The Magnificent Seven (*cough cough* better than Samurai *cough cough*)

Favorite Moment: When Vin (Steve) finally gets so annoyed that he calmly picks up his gun and shoots down Horst Buchholz.

Oh, wait. JUNK IT! That doesn't happen. Sheesh! ;-D

ACTUALLY, my favorite moment is when Vin starts getting so utterly confused about why there are no women in the village!

You know - I've been in some towns where the girls weren't all that pretty. In fact I've been in some towns where they're downright ugly. But it's the first time I've been in a town where there are no girls at all, 'cept little ones. You know if we're not careful we could have quite a social life here

The expression on his face as he says it, makes me burst out laughing every time!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Love With The Proper Stranger

It's a tragedy this film isn't more well known! Steve gives a brilliant performance (one of his best in my opinion), and perfectly balances the drama, the even crazier drama, and then the comedy. Seriously.

Favorite Moment:

No question. Last scene. It's like the ultimate "AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!" moment. And Natalie wears a stinkin' cool coat. But, THAT has no basis on my decision. Really. ;-D

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hell is For Heroes

This is the film where The King of Cool meets The Divine god of Cool (aka Bobby Darin). We had a poll about who was cooler on Twitter, but Bobby was losing greatly (Raquelle and I were the only ones on his side. Haha!) It's frankly an incredibly strange...and depressing movie. The cast die off one by one according to billing (lowest billed dying first and working it's way on up) and the ending would be super-sad, but it's so abrupt you don't know what exactly happened. AND Nick Adams attempts some strange accent, that I STILL cannot figure out-- but I digress. Because I still love this movie. ;-D

Favorite Moment: I don't have a particular moment exactly. He's just very Steve McQueen throughout. He takes his famous understated acting to just a whole new level of understatement. And of course, the ending is pretty much just craziness. But, yeah.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Honeymoon Machine

Poor Steve. When this film is even ever acknowledged, it is universally declared as "a horrible mess!" WHAT?! SERIOUSLY J'ADORE THIS MOVIE. (Casey lent it to me two months ago, and I haven't returned it yet. Eeek! I kinda need to stop watching it over and over I think. ;-D)

I think I know where the problem lies. Often the people who are Steve's biggest fans are not exactly those who also thoroughly enjoy mind-smushing 60's farce. And those who thoroughly enjoy mind-smushing 60's farce are not exactly those who watch a lot of westerns/crazy-war-action-gun movies! As an objective bystander, being a 15 year-old girl who completely adores stupid 60's movies and crazy-war-action-western-gun movies, my opinion will be the final one. This movie is hilarious. And Steve gives a completely hilarious performance. A large departure from his normal understatedness, but the over-the-topness works perfectly in this film.

Favorite Moment: Gosh, there are seriously too many too choose from! Perhaps the scene in the casino when he "gets found out". The annoying girl starts implying and exaggerating things to her father and Steve says nothing, but his face becomes more and more distraught until....I'm laughing hysterically. Seriously.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But, of course my most favorite Steve role, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever is:

Josh Randall.

Wanted: Dead or Alive is one of my favorite shows ever. And Steve is brilliant throughout the series as always. He gets to be cool, tough (HE STINKIN' REFUSES TO HELP SOME NUNS RECOVER ANOTHER NUN BEING HELD HOSTAGE! Because they have nothing to offer him but their prayers and (I paraphrase) "Prayers can't help him too much at the poker table!") and occasionally funny (Not gonna lie, I actually love the episode where he tries to find the lost sheep and almost gets hung by "cattlemen" in the process!).

My family owns all three seasons of the show, and I have seen each episode many times. It's just such a great show. OF COURSE, because of Steve being just brilliant as the loner Josh Randall with the sawed-off shotgun as his weapon of choice!

I can't possibly decide a favorite moment from this series, but randomly a scene from one episode just came to mind.

It's one of the episodes with his pseudo partner Jason who LITERALLY tagged along (annoying Josh Randall all the way) for a few episodes in the second season before disappearing forever (YAAAAY!).

He of course is convinced he is somehow NOT a complete idiot and can actually figure out how to get to the outlaw they seek. He keeps telling Josh that the ONLY way they will be able to figure it out is if they commit to a strict: "No poker, no women, no Tequila!"

After a long day with no progress (because he is an idiot) Jason comes back to the hotel to find Josh drinking, while playing poker with a saloon girl. It's just hilarity. Of course, after this LONG description it doesn't sound funny. OH WELL! ;-D

^Steve doesn't find my description funny either! ;-D

THIS POST IS DRAGGING ON WAAAY TOO LONG.

I need to wrap it up! Hahaa!

A few last photos:

With his wife Neile Adams, who I utterly adore!

Well, that's about it! Be sure an celebrate 80 years of Wowzie Kazam Coolness by watching, reading, writing, listening to SOMETHING remotely Steve (preferably that W:DOA episode, I just attempted to explain. Just so I don't look like a complete idiot! ;-D)

Happy 80th Mr. McQueen!

Ross Martin's 90th Birthday!

Ross Martin {March 22, 1920 - July 3, 1981}

It's crazy! I had no idea that it was Ross' birthday today, when I wrote the post about Experiment in Terror on Saturday; or when I chose him to be the next voice in my favorite voices series. In fact, I planned on posting that voice post today! Now, I think I'll wait a couple of days...to keep the mini-Ross Martin blogathon going! ;-D

Ross was literally and simply-- just brilliant.

Every role he played, whether on television or film was amazing. He couldn't NOT be amazing and original.

Ross was:

A concert-trained violinist.

Multilingual (he spoke Polish, Russian, and Yiddish, before learning English, Spanish, Italian, and French).

Nominated for both an Emmy (The Wild Wild West) and a Golden Globe (Experiment in Terror).

THE coolest Columbo villain ever. Yes. I am stating a definite answer.

The best ever Hollywood Squares guest. (Paul Lynde?! Who CARES ABOUT PAUL LYNDE?)

Peter Falk's acting teacher. Oh, yes!

So amazing in The Great Race that he stole the scenes he was in, away from Peter Falk AND a gloriously over-the-top Jack Lemmon (a difficult task)!

The Phantom Asthmatic.

THE coolest Secret Service agent. EVER. Do not try to debate me on this fact.

--Which magically brings me to what Ross was just the coolest ever as:

Secret Agent Artemus Gordon.

As Artemus Gordon in The Wild Wild West, Ross got to use all of his skills. Because Artemus is both a genius AND the greatest person for disguises...ever!

Almost every episode sees him in some disguise or another. And with Ross, he didn't just put on a costume, wig, and beard (ahem, which he also designed himself from his own sketches). He put on an entire new voice, and an entire new way of walking, and an entire new set of facial expressions. Even though, you are waiting for him, sometimes, it can be difficult just to pick out exactly WHO is Ross!

That's brilliance.

In fact, once Ross had a little trouble, because he forgot to take off one of his costumes:

I went home one afternoon to pick up a script without bothering to change, and a half an hour later the Beverly Hills Police were at my door because a neighbor had reported a suspicious stranger lurking around Ross Martin's house. I had to peel off my beard to prove who I was.

Did I also mention that Ross was simply hilarious?

Unfortunately, Ross had a heart trouble. He suffered a heart attack during the fourth season of WWW and had to leave the show. It struggled out it last few episodes, and never came back for a fifth season. (CBS was pressured into canceling it, because it was "too violent". SERIOUSLY!?!?)

After recovering, he worked often, mainly character parts (that he did so well) in many different TV series. He also managed to come back for two WWW made-for-TV movies that were very popular.

Ross elevated anything he was in. There never was and never will be anyone like him. He was so completely original.....and brilliant.

So, Happy 90th Birthday to Mr. Martin! The world would have been A LOT less cool without him!

Watch a video someone compiled of many Ross "disguises":

Happy {almost two days late} Birthday, SARAH! AND take the "Ultimate" Sarah Video Quiz!

It's really no secret. Sarah is one of the coolest people to ever exist. And now, she's turning (cough cough turned cough cough) 17.

Sarah and I go WAAAAAAY back. I just realized the other day, that when I first met her I was thirteen....THIRTEEN. That was back in good old '08. Place: TCM Message Boards. Occupation: talking incessantly about Audrey Hepburn with her and Harley! Gosh. It seems like yesterday when we were arguing about her hats or fighting off attacks from non-Audrey adorers! ;-D

Anyway, I truly think that Sarah is one of the coolest and most amazing people I have ever "met". She's hilarious, crazy-smart, AND THINKS UP THE COOLEST PHRASES EVER!

Seriously.

"Holy Corn Maze!"; "Peanut Butter and Jealous". These are just a couple of the amazing things the queen of quips creates!

I WANT TO BE SARAH. I am not even joking.

Except that she lives in NY, and I could NEVER, EVER leave glorious Washington. But, hey, otherwise - I WANT TO BE SARAH.

The only depressing thing about Sarah, is that when I first met her she was younger than I am now (we are a year apart), yet she was already 50 zillion times cooler. That's depressing. ;-D

Sarah as a blog-writer is something brilliant to behold! So, methinks you should go follow her blog. Now. You will live with no regrets, then.

Wow, this post is starting to sound so strange (I'm tired, okay! ;-D)

That's right, I should mention that I was going to post this YESTERDAY, but the horrible realization that I had not finished my homework for co-op dawned on me just as I was going to undertake the construction of this post. (I mustache run-on sentences!) Instead of writing this, I got to read about people getting their heads chopped off by the guillotine. Four words: Tale of Two Cities.

And, I sorta started to get freaked out that people were actually excited (maybe excitement is a strong word! ;-D) for this post. Because seriously, I am not that exciting, except in the "watching a pot of oil explode on the stove and then having your mom throw it outside where it bursts into flames and send fireballs on to the lawn" kind of exciting. (true story.)

But, I really just want to wish Sarah a happy birthday (even though it was actually yesterday)! And hope that she has an even better one next year. WHEN SHE TURNS STINKIN' 18! eeek!

I mustache you!

Now, on to the Supercalifragilisticlly dorky part of this Birthday post:

The "Ultimate" Sarah Quiz.

Which is actually not as cool as it sounds. Sadly.

A} I have a strange voice
B} After every answer my words get cut off...hilariously and unintentionally.
C} Who knows where I'm getting this info from.
D} I act SO dorky in it!
E} You must forgive me, because it was very late when it was created. I OBVIOUSLY did not have hold of 83% of my senses. (The 17% prevented my from starting a sing-a-long to PBS Kids theme songs, "Everyday when you're walking down the street, everybody that you meet, has an original point of view, and I say HEY! (HEY!) what a wonderful kind of day.")
F} I had WAAAAY too much fun creating this. And it's sooo stupid.

I feel like I should now apologize for the overwhelming dorkiness of the video. But, somewhere, deep down in it, I was TRYING to express my best wishes for Sarah! Haha, I hope it slightly came across!

Happy Birthday, Sarah! I hope I get to wish you MANY, MANY more! :-D

-Millie

Check out when Sarah was just turning 16!

Saturday, March 13, 2010

Happy Birthday Sarah!

Happy 17th to Sarah! I hope some day, I'll be half as cool as she is!

-Millie

Full birthday post coming later!

Happy 65 Birthday, Mr. Dolenz!

Today is the 65th birthday of Micky Dolenz...aka THE coolest member of The Monkees, and probably the most talented as well!

It's funny, because within the last few days I've been thinking a lot about The Monkees, and structuring in my mind a mini-series I am going to be writing about them, titled, ahem, "The Underrated Genius of The Monkees" (yes, genius! DON'T LAUGH!).

So, today, when I woke up (sick with bad asthma...and unable to do anything but sit around) and checked Twitter and saw that Sarah had tweeted me: "It's Micky Dolenz's birthday today! Party is in order!" I was rather excited!

I adore The Monkees, I love their music and I love their TV show. I also think they were and still are utterly and unfairly dismissed as "the pre-fab four". But, I'm not going to get into that right now, haha, you've got to wait for my genius series for that! ;-D

Instead, I'm going to talk about Micky.

Micky is probably the most talented member of The Monkees (closely followed by Peter). Mike was the songwriter, who played guitar (and sang), and also was involved in the producing on many Monkees songs. Peter was the crazy talented musician. He played, I'm convinced, every instrument ever known to man. He also sang, and wrote a few songs. Davy was, um, the "actor". He had history in musical theater and Broadway. He also played the tambourine. AHHAHA! (Okay, and a little bit drums and VERY little bit of guitar).

But, Micky was also a songwriter (my favorite of his being Randy Scouse Git), and a musician (he played the drums, guitar, and a few other instruments), and a hilarious actor.

And on top of all this, he was THE lead vocals for The Monkees. According to Mike, it was Micky's singing that gave the Monkees a distinctive sound. Mike and Peter often, willingly, handed over songs that they had written for Micky to sing. He was just that amazing.

The Monkees most famous song:

You simply HAVE to watch the epic-amazingness that is this video. (AND I DON'T EVEN LIKE USING THE WORD "EPIC"!) The Monkees singing Words, except everything is backwards, because Davy is playing the drums (and, um, wind chimes?!?) and Micky is playing the tambourine (and singing the lead). While Peter is looking really intense and upset. And Mike's off in the corner looking bored and disinterested. IT'S UTTER BRILLIANCE!

^You KNOW you are peanut butter and jealous (a Sarahism) that Micky has those cool glasses! ;-D

Pleasant Valley Sunday is one of The Monkees' most critically "respected" songs. This video is memorable for many reasons. One, being that Micky is NOT wearing his favorite fashion piece...EVER.....the ugly upholstery fabric poncho. Hahaha! Although, I for one, am having trouble believing that Davy is REALLY playing that guitar.

A rather funny clip from an episode of The Monkees, with Micky playing a not-funny comedian and horrible impressionist (James Cagney and Edward G. Robinson have the exact same voice). Also watch for Mike playing a awkward, shy folk singer, SINGING DIFFERENT DRUM (one of Mike's compositions before The Monkees).

An utterly strange, but VERY fascinating song, sung by Micky. And, if you are feeling the need to make fun of his dancing.......just watch Davy "dance". Micky looks like Fred Astaire comparatively! ;-D

Footage of Micky in concert singing, "I Gotta Woman".

My favorite of all Micky's compositions. Listen for his mention of The Beatles: "The four kings of E.M.I. are sitting stately on the floor"

And speaking of Beatles sitting on the floor:

Well, I GUEEEEESSS that's enough clips! Hahaha!

The only problem is, that there are hardly any Monkees songs on YouTube (I tried to put one up Saturday and it IMMEDIATELY was blocked!) I would load some other, lesser-known Monkees songs here, but, tragically, I had not finished transferring all my music from my family's computer to this laptop, when my family's computer crashed. Leaving me with just ONE Monkees album (a greatest hits) instead of all the songs I had been slowly purchasing and downloading since I was ten. EERRRRGGGGHHHH!

Anyway, be sure to check back soon for, ahem, "The Underrated Genius of The Monkees". ;-D

Happy Birthday, Micky! I hope you enjoy many more years!

^Micky's beloved poncho.

Why Harley is one of THE coolest people to ever exist!

I just wanted to wish Harley the best birthday ever (she's turning 19)! And also write a little post on WHY she's so cool.

**She makes up cool words. Seriously. SOO amazing. (Also she's very "continental" and uses words like "j'adore" and "wunderbar".

**She is the schizophrenic version of me (or MAYBE vice-versa). It's true.

**She had the utter nerve to post a video of Dana in Laura and mention that it wasn't ME, it was Gene...sheesh....;-D

**She makes up weird nicknames for stars! Audgers is quite cool. However, I can't bring myself to mention her nickname for Sinatra...

**Speaking of Sinatra. Bottled Sinatra is gonna change the world!

**She thinks The Kid is cooler! (Wait, you do, right? AHAHAHAHA!)

**She listens to me talk ENDLESSLY about Sierra Leone anytime of the day or night!

**She responds to ALL my formsprings even if they are about her making up songs about Dean Martin....

**I've known her for over a year now (TCM MESSAGE BOARDS!!), and we've been to mostly EVERY classic movie forum/message board on the internet. Only kicked out of six.

**We were both bridesmaid's in Merriam's wedding to Paul Newman...don't ask. Okay, if you REALLY want to know....CLICK HERE!

I don't know what else to say? There's just TOO much that could be said. She's just amazing. AN EXTREMELY GOOD FRIEND! A best non-fleshie! She's utterly cool, yet she still hangs out with ME (on the internet)!

Everyone raise your glasses in a toast to the super-amazing Harley!

"Why Spencer, I didn't KNOW you had good taste?!!? Yes, Harley is pretty Wowzie Kazam [cause Grace Kelly would TOTALLY say that]! This birthday party is amazing!"

Happy 19th Harley! I hope you enjoy MANY, MANY, MANY more!

Saturday, January 16, 2010

HAPPPPPPPPPPPYYYYY BIRTHDAY, HARLEY!!!

Here's to Harley! One of THE coolest people to ever exist! I hope you have SPLENDID 19th birthday...and an even BETTER "last year of being a teenage classic movie fan"!

And, a better post is coming later! I just wanted to make sure I wished a happy birthday really quick!

-Millie!

Happy 101st Birthday Dana!

I ALMOST missed it! Well, technically I did, cause it's now 3:ooam...but maybe I'll just change the time of the post so, it looks like I JUST made it! ;-D!

Anyways, today is the 101st anniversary of Dana Andrews' birth! The classic film world would have been a lot emptier without him! And, I of course would be very sad without my favorite actor ever!

Happy Birthday Dana!

Happy 75th Birthday Mr. Tamblyn!

Today is Russ Tamblyn's 75th birthday! I wish him many more years!

Although, most people always think of Riff the leader of the Jets when they think of Russ, I will ALWAYS think of Gideon, the second coolest Pontipee brother (only behind Adam) from Seven Brides For Seven Brothers!

Watch the brilliant barn dance scene from SBFSB choreographed by Michael Kidd! Russ is in the bright blue shirt:

Happy 88th Birthday to the great, wonderful, beyond amazing, Deanna Durbin!

I just love Deanna Durbin, so much, that's it difficult for me to find something to say on this occasion of her 88th birthday!

She has always meant so much to me! When I was 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 she was my absolute favorite actress ever! I checked out her films constantly from the library! In fact, I've seen all but one of her films at least once! Most many, many times! She's inexplicably underrated and unknown today (although, she probably appreciates the latter, being such a private person)! But, not to me! I really think she's just the greatest!

In fact a few months ago I sent her a letter, oh my, it was THE most disjointed and horribly written thing ever, but I just said how she meant so much to me! To tell you the truth I had been planning and rewriting this letter since I was 8, but I finally just decided to do it! I wasn't expecting anything back, just the thought that she MIGHT actually read it was the coolest thing ever! But, amazingly, just two weeks later I received an envelope from Deanna Durbin David! I was so excited I was jumping up and down! She sent me a personalized, signed photo of herself.

Unfortunately, it was sitting on my desk, awaiting a frame, and I went away for the weekend. When I came back it was gone, I think someone accidentally threw it away. This is so upsetting!!! :-( I did scan it before it disappeared, but it's just not the same!

ANYWAYS, away from that sad story! Haha, I have a few Deanna related items and one of my very favorites is a 1938 article from LIFE magazine! I scanned it for you to read, but my scanner is being incredibly annoying and cut off parts of the article AND made everything very blurry! UGH! Anyways, here it is (click to enlarge):

It's difficult to choose my favorite Deanna film, because I love them all, but the first film that I adored Deanna in was Can't Help Singing. When I was very young (like 5) I had seen Three Smart Girls A BILLION ZILLION times! But, I had never connected that THAT was Deanna Durbin. But, one day, when I was about seven, I saw a VHS of Can't Help Singing checked out from the library just sitting around! My mom said I could watch it, so I put it in. By the time the finale came up and they were singing "Californiay" I was gone! I've never stopped loving Deanna since then. And she is LITERALLY a part of my childhood! Especially, between the ages of about 8-11! Anyways...

And now, some random picspam!

^Aww, cute little Deanna!

Sorry about this disjointed post! Hahaha, I can never write clearly when talking about Deanna! ;-D

Check out KC's brilliant post on Deanna!

Hmm, maybe I'll go watch Lady On A Train...
